Last Expense Cover
Losing a loved one is painful enough. Raising money for funeral expenses should not add to the burden.
Last Expense Insurance, also known as Funeral Insurance or Burial Cover, provides a cash benefit to help your loved ones meet funeral arrangements, transportation, burial expenses and other immediate obligations following the death of an insured person. Unlike Group Last Expense Insurance, it does not require membership in a chama, SACCO or welfare association.
Through Birdview Microinsurance, you can choose from flexible plans for individuals, nuclear families and extended families, with annual cover starting from just KSh 510 for an individual.

- Copy of the Claimant's National ID or Passport — for identification and verification.
- Burial Permit or Death Certificate — as required by the insurer to confirm the death.
- Medical or Hospital Report — where applicable, to establish the cause of death.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest Individual Last Expense Insurance in Kenya?
Birdview Microinsurance's published standard individual Last Expense plan starts from KSh 510 a year for KSh 50,000 in funeral benefits. This is a provider-specific starting price, not necessarily the lowest available across the Kenyan insurance market.
Can I buy funeral insurance without joining a chama?
Yes. Individual and family Last Expense Insurance options are available without requiring membership in an organised group.
Can I cover my parents and parents-in-law?
Yes. Extended Family Last Expense plans may include eligible parents and parents-in-law, subject to the insurer's age limits and policy conditions.
Can I cover my siblings?
Yes. Birdview offers a separate Extended Family option including siblings, subject to eligibility.
Are Last Expense premiums paid monthly or annually?
The premiums shown on this page are annual rates. Any alternative payment arrangements should be confirmed with the insurer.
Are claims paid within 48 hours?
Qualifying claims may be processed within 48 hours of receipt of complete documentation where the insurer offers expedited settlement. Actual processing time depends on verification, policy terms and the circumstances of the claim.
Is there a waiting period?
Waiting periods depend on the selected plan and cause of death. It is important to review the applicable waiting period before purchasing cover.
If the principal member dies, does the family cover end immediately?
Not always. Many plans keep the remaining family members covered until the policy's renewal date, and some allow the spouse to take over the policy. Check the continuation terms before choosing a plan.
Can I add a new family member mid-policy?
Usually, yes. You can add a newborn or new spouse during the year by paying a pro-rated premium. A short waiting period may apply to the new member before they are covered.
