Endowment Cover

An Endowment Savings Plan is a dual-purpose life insurance product that combines disciplined savings with life protection. You contribute regular premiums over an agreed term, and at maturity the insurer pays you the sum assured together with any accumulated bonuses.

If you die during the policy term, your nominated beneficiaries receive the sum assured plus accrued bonuses, so the financial goal you were working toward is still protected.

Endowment plans are popular in Kenya for education planning, land purchases, business capital and other medium- to long-term goals where you want both a savings discipline and a safety net.

Why It Matters

Benefits Of An Endowment Savings Plan

Savings And Protection Combined

Every premium payment builds your savings toward a specific goal while also keeping your family protected if something happens to you during the term.

Guaranteed Maturity Benefit

At the end of the policy term, you receive the sum assured together with any applicable bonuses — a guaranteed payout you can plan around.

Death Benefit For Your Family

If you die during the term, your beneficiaries receive the full sum assured plus accrued bonuses, so the goal you were saving for can still be met.

Potential Annual Bonuses

Eligible policies may receive bonuses declared by the insurer, credited after the first full calendar year and accumulating alongside the policy benefit.

Tax Relief On Premiums

Eligible policyholders may benefit from 15% tax relief on qualifying premiums, up to KSh 60,000 annually, subject to the Income Tax Act and prevailing regulations.

Flexible Payout Options

Some plans pay the full benefit at maturity, while others pay portions at intervals during the term — for example, to coincide with school fees or planned purchases.

How It Differs

Endowment Vs Term Life Vs Whole Life

Understanding the differences helps you choose the right product for your goal.

  • Term Life pays only on death during the term — nothing at maturity. It is the cheapest form of life cover but has no savings element.
  • Whole Life covers you for your entire lifetime with no fixed maturity date. It builds a cash value over time but premiums are higher.
  • An Endowment Plan pays on death OR at maturity — whichever comes first. It combines savings with protection for a defined period, making it ideal for specific financial goals.
Payout Structure

How Endowment Payouts Work

The payout structure depends on the plan you choose. Common options include:

  • Full maturity payout — 100% of the sum assured plus bonuses paid at the end of the term.
  • Staggered payouts — portions of the sum assured paid at set intervals during the term, with the remainder plus bonuses at maturity.
  • Death benefit — if you die during the term, 100% of the sum assured plus accrued bonuses is paid to your beneficiaries.
  • Some plans also offer a waiver of premium benefit, so the insurer continues paying your premiums if you become totally and permanently disabled.
How It Works

How An Endowment Savings Plan Works

01

Define Your Goal

Decide what you are saving for — education, land, a business investment, or another milestone — and when you need the money.

02

Choose Your Sum Assured And Term

Select the amount you want at maturity and the policy term, typically 10 to 25 years. Your premium is calculated based on these.

03

Pay Regular Premiums

Contribute monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. Each payment builds your savings and keeps your life cover active.

04

Bonuses Accumulate

The insurer may declare annual bonuses that are added to your policy, growing the eventual payout beyond the basic sum assured.

05

Maturity Or Claim

At the end of the term, you receive the sum assured plus bonuses. If you die during the term, your beneficiaries receive the benefit.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an endowment policy and a term life policy?

A term life policy pays only if you die during the term, with nothing back if you survive it. An endowment policy combines life cover with savings: it pays your beneficiaries if you die during the term, and pays you the maturity value if you survive to the end.

Can I choose how many payouts I receive?

Some endowment plans pay the whole benefit at maturity, while others pay part of it at set points during the term, for example to coincide with school fees or a land purchase. We help you choose the payout pattern that matches your goal.

What happens if I die before the policy matures?

Your nominated beneficiaries receive the sum assured, together with any bonuses earned, according to the policy terms, so the goal you were saving for can still be met.

What happens to my savings if I become critically ill or disabled?

That depends on the riders you add. With a waiver of premium rider, the insurer can continue paying your premiums if you become disabled, so the plan still matures as planned. Some policies also offer critical illness benefits.

Can I access my money before the policy matures?

Usually, once the policy has been in force for a minimum period, you can surrender it for its surrender value or take a policy loan against it. Surrendering early often returns less than you have paid in, so it is best treated as a last resort.

What happens if I miss a premium payment?

There is normally a grace period, often 30 days, to pay without losing cover. After that the policy may lapse, or become paid-up with a reduced benefit if it has built a surrender value. Lapsed policies can often be reinstated within a set period.

Can I have both an endowment policy and a pension plan?

Yes, and many people do. An endowment policy saves for a specific goal at a fixed date, while a pension builds income for retirement. They serve different purposes and work well together.

Is an endowment policy eligible for tax relief?

Life policies with a term of at least 10 years may qualify for insurance relief under Kenyan tax law, currently 15% of premiums paid up to a set limit. Relief is subject to KRA rules, so confirm your eligibility with your advisor or tax consultant.

Can I use an endowment policy as loan collateral?

Often, yes. Once a policy has built up a surrender value, many lenders and SACCOs accept it as security, and you can assign it to the lender for the period of the loan, subject to the insurer's approval.

What is the minimum policy term for an endowment plan?

Most insurers require a minimum term of 10 years for an endowment savings plan. Longer terms allow more time for bonuses to accumulate and for compounding to work in your favour.

Can I take out more than one endowment policy?

Yes. Some people take out separate endowment policies for different goals — one for education, another for a land purchase — each with its own term and sum assured.

What is a paid-up policy?

If you stop paying premiums after the policy has been in force for a minimum period, the insurer may convert it to a paid-up policy with a reduced sum assured. The policy remains in force but with lower benefits.

Can my spouse be covered under my endowment policy?

Some insurers offer joint life endowment plans that cover both spouses. Benefits are paid on the first death, and the surviving spouse may continue with the policy or receive a benefit, depending on the plan.

How are endowment bonuses calculated?

Bonuses are declared by the insurer based on the performance of the life fund. They are typically expressed as a percentage of the sum assured and are credited annually. Once declared, they are usually guaranteed and cannot be taken away.

Can I increase my sum assured during the policy term?

Some insurers allow you to increase your sum assured at certain policy anniversaries, subject to underwriting and possibly a medical examination. This can be useful if your income or savings goals grow over time.
